Although the high rate of cocaine addicts seeking rehabilitation is a welcomed trend, we can’t ignore the role of trap houses in spreading the vice. In recent years, the rising prevalence of heroin has been accompanied by an increasing number of fatal/severe overdoses—some occurring in trap houses. News highlighted the untimely death of a 20-year old—who was found in a trap house overdosed on heroin. In another case covered by The New York Times, an Iraq veteran narrated his ordeal after buying heroin laced with fentanyl (a synthetic opioid). He claimed that withdrawal from the drug was excruciating and the addiction too powerful.

The American Society of Addiction Medicine goes on to claim that heroin is one of the most addictive drugs. The substance is appealing to users due to its intensely euphoric high, rapid-onset, and the relatively inexpensive production process. To give you an overview of the urgency of the matter, an article appearing in theJournal of the American Medical Association(JAMA) notes that cases of opioid overdose deaths in the U.S. have tripled from 2000 to 2015.

During his absence, Melissa becomes involved with drug dealers and is addicted to crack. Most everything Americans know about crack comes to us in the form of myth, stereotype, and innuendo. When the crack epidemic is mentioned now, it’s usually as a punch line. Crack as a superdrug, dealers as superpredators, irredeemable crackheads and crack babies all get evoked to prove a point.

Students there told the Sacramento Bee they felt compelled to take action. The original encampments at Columbia called for the university to divest from weapons manufacturers with ties to Israel. The protests have led to mass suspensions of students, and the arrests of hundreds. The truth is that network neutrality has been heavily favored by the public, in part because examples of ISPs abusing their power were not hard to find. In 2007, Comcast was caught degrading traffic from the file-sharing service BitTorrent, which held contracts to distribute licensed content from Hollywood studios and other sources in direct competition with Comcast’s pay-TV business. Statistical data by NSDUH shows that the number of new heroin users increased from 90,000 in 2006 to 170,000 in 2016—nearly doubling in the span of a decade.

The neighborhood could hear her parties at all hours of the night. She looked “a mess.” It was all “just so sad,” my mom would say with a slow shake of her head. She would move on to other topics, but I stayed fixed on Michelle and tried to imagine what might be going on just a few feet away.
Protests on campus have continued, despite the arrests of more than 100 students last week. Faculty members are considering a censure vote for Nemat Shafik, Columbia’s president, and other officials. Demonstrations outside the school gates have added to the upheaval, with protesters who appear unconnected to the university targeting Jewish students.

They figured the police couldn't charge a minor for drug possession. While most crack houses feature some or all of the above issues, others maintain a much milder, cleaner atmosphere. The people who run and frequent these crack houses tend to have less severe addictions.
Reexamining The Crack Epidemic

In another arrest in Massachusetts, a joint DEA and FBI effort nabbed a drug dealer accused of owning three trap houses in New Bedford and distributing cocaine. With opioid overdose deaths reaching new highs, the conversation about expanding harm reduction programs is more urgent than ever. In response, cities across the country have indicated support for opening overdose prevention centers (OPCs). In addition to administering naloxone in the event of an overdose, many OPCs provide wrap-around services such as health education, sterile supplies for using drugs, primary medical care, treatment and social services referrals. It’s been two years since New York City became home to the nation’s first legally sanctioned supervised consumption program, where people can take illicit drugs like heroin, crack and methamphetamine under medical supervision. More than 1,000 potentially fatal overdoses have been reversed and many people who use the facilities have been connected to support services, including addiction treatment.
Proponents of OPCs want states and localities to open centers to help combat the opioid overdose crisis.
It threatened to envelop us, but we did our best to outrun it. We avoided the police who profiled us as drug dealers and gangbangers. Similar to heroin, tragic cases involving meth and traphouses are not new in news outlets. From raids of trap houses dealing with meth in Massachusetts or Ashland County to fatal scuffles in Winnipeg, Canada—trap houses are clearly a menace.
